Dental Abroad - About Malta
Location
Largely English-speaking (though it does have its own language), and nestling
between Sicily and North Africa, it is a small island (about 17 miles long) right in the middle of the
Mediterranean, with a population of about 400,000.
History
Malta has a wonderfully rich history, and was a base for the Knights of St John for
268 years. The architectural fortifications are a marvel. Having been a base for the Knights Templar, it is also
rich in religious history. Churches (there are 359) are on a grand scale (though there are mosques as well). Malta
was attacked in 1565 by a massive Ottoman force over 25,000 strong, and the ensuing bloody battle is known as ‘The
Great Siege of Malta’. More recently, Malta has been subject to strong British influence, which is still very
apparent today.
During the Second World War, Malta was a strategic British naval and air base. The
island was subjected to a dreadful bombardment by the Axis powers, but was unbowed. Civilian loss of life was
massive, and the bravery of its people was recognised by the UK when the Island was award the George Cross (the
highest British award for civilian bravery). The George Cross symbol still appears on the national flag and coat of
arms.
Other
Islands
Sicily is only 60 miles
away – a couple of hours on the regular fast ferry service. Malta has a smaller sister island called Gozo, 3 miles
away. It is a tranquil haven for a change of tempo – it is greener, more rural and smaller, with its rhythms
dictated by the seasons, fishing and agriculture. Steeped in legend, It is also thought to be the legendary
‘Calypso’ of Homer's Odyssey. Gozo also possesses a nightlife and cultural calendar all of its own, with some
great dining out. If you prefer, you can have dental work done in Gozo, there is an excellent clinic. Gozo pictures
